- Talanoa to Change Men's Programme
It’s a sad fact that New Zealand has one of the worst mental health statistics in the world, with men being affected by it the most. Men often face stereotypes that they have to be strong, tough, and can’t show emotions. One in eight men, will experience an episode of major depressive disorder in New Zealand – higher than woman (Community and Public Health). More than that, family violence events have increased 60% over the past five years and are predicted to increase by a further 35% by 2025 (Good Shepherd NZ).
These are some disappointing statistics for New Zealand and we want to do our part to support men’s wellbeing. We want to highlight that it is okay for men to be vulnerable – It is okay to not be okay. To do this, men need an environment that encourages them to talk about their wellbeing.
The Talanoa2Change Men’s Programme provides a safe space for men to share, to be vulnerable and open, to be heard and understood, and to start the process of change. The Talanoa2Change Men’s Programme empowers men to lead themselves and their families, through positive wellbeing tools. This programme is open to all men from diverse backgrounds, different age groups (18 to 65 years), and different cultures.
The Talanoa2Change Men’s Programme runs for 7 weeks and focuses on different topics that contribute to men becoming better fathers, husbands and leaders in their own lives. A key benefit of The programme is the individualised approach within a group setting. Individual assessments for each participant are conducted during the first weeks of engagement and assist in identifying individual concerns and needs of each man. A further 5 months of mentoring and connection is sustained to support lasting change. A strength of the programme is the safe and open environment.
The seven sessions will include:
